RIP The Hut, killed by arson

Fire in a forestry hut in Backbarrow
(South Lakeland)
30 Jan 2013

At 20:41 firefighters were called to a building fire in a woods near Harebridge House on Hazelrigg Lane in Newby Bridge in Backbarrow.
When crews arrived they found that a forestry hut had been destroyed by a blaze. Crews used specialist equipment to damp down the area and ensure there was no further risk of fire.

breaksbassbleeps asked: Hi. I saw your cabin on amazing spaces and it looked great. I'm interested in doing something similar myself and was wondering if you would be able to shed a little light on the prior approval process? Would I be correct in saying that this is what is needed, even if you are building within permitted development? Thanks for any help you can offer. Alex.

I used the prior notification of permitted development as my store is for the purpose of forestry.

Draw up some plans, make your submission and wait 28 days with fingers crossed. Either they write to you saying yes/no or you hear nothing and this means a yes by default.

Do not do what someone i knew did and decide that ’ hey im in the middle of some woods, ill just build it.’ Prior notification doesnt work if it already exists and retrospective planning permission is a pain and rarely goes through.

Take your time, do everything above board, as i have done, and have fun!

Nice to see your hut in al it’s glory on the Christmas special. A shame you didn’t get down for the party, though I suspect they didn’t invite you because of that AWFUL Christmas jumper.. or continued lack of beard. Or both. Given the choice between a cabin in the Lakes or a gents urinal in London I know which I’d choose.

Thank you so much, yep, I enjoyed the christmas special more in some ways. They did invite me but being a full time teacher in a boarding school, I couldnt just not be there for a day, despite how much I desperately wanted to go. Give it a rest on the beard/jumper front alrite ;-) I am bearded now, but you cant see.

Have a great 2013!

Christmas Special

George returns for a Christmas special, visiting Christmas-themed builds including a gingerbread house, an underground grotto decorated with over four and a half million shells, and a beach hut advent calendar where every day a festive space opens its doors to the public.

George also catches up with expert designer William, to look back on the extraordinary journey to transform his 1970s caravan into a spectacular 21st century holiday retreat.

George meets up the couple who invested their life savings in the hope of converting a wreck of a bus into a holiday let; the teacher in his forester’s woodland hut in the Lake District; the architect who transformed a disused underground toilet into an incredible apartment; and the man who now has a shipping container for an office in his back garden.
